Do I need to do daily spiritual practice?
Yes. Spiritual practice is like a Russian doll - you know, the little doll inside another doll, within a larger doll. For example, doing yoga in a class is like the largest doll. Doing yoga at home is like the smaller doll. Doing yoga in your heart, is like the smallest doll.

One day I asked my Guru, "What mantra should I be doing? You gave so many mantras and practices." She said, "Do what practices you want, my son." She didn't give me an answer to satisfy my mind. She wanted me to make a choice in my heart, and stick to it. Even though there are many prescribed practices, the ones made with a sincere heart and performed for a specified amount of time, show us where our commitment is. Every second ask yourself, "What is my commitment? Am I being true to myself?" At Satsang in Atlanta several years ago Shree Maa said, "Meditate with your whole heart." Traktung Khepa Rimpoche once asked me, "What is the heart of your practice?".
If you have five minutes do five minutes of practice. Don't try to do an hour. And don't worry about not having "enough" time to "get your practice done." If you are flexible, realistic, and loyal, you can practice according to your capacity, and make progress wherever you are.
Finding a teacher who you love and respect, and who loves and respects you, is essential. Many practices cannot be completed without the instruction of our Guru. As Rudi said, w e need a Guru "who can check our work". And as Osho explained, we need a Guru like a woman in labor needs a midwife. When we are deep in labor, we can relax ... and let our Guru guide the birth.
The method involves personal growth. But the goal does not involve personal growth. It's simply not about "You." |
